Plenty of 3.5mm to USB-C dongles out there but which one is the best?

I have tested the Google Pixel dongle, HTC dongle, Moto Z dongle and the Essential PH-1 dongle on 10 different phones and the results might actually surprise you.

(Update) I've just tested the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 and the dongle which comes in the box is actually better than the HTC one and it costs just $2.99!

Have in mind that the overall headphone output depends on the phone itself. For example I got better results from the Essential dongle on the HTC U Ultra than using it with the Essential phone itself. Another example: no matter the dongle, the output of the Leagoo is bad.

Even if you have a 3.5mm jack on your phone you can still use a dongle to boost the headphone output but more on that topic in this video:
