Compare portable USB storage speed results between SSD and HDD devices. The Samsung T5 Portable 250 GB SSD is put to the test against the Seagate Expansion 2 TB HDD.
With the help of ATTO Disk Benchmark , the read and write performance of each portable device was inspected at various file sizes. The default software program settings were used during the review.
Note, the Samsung T5 supports USB 3.1 via its USB-C port. This should give even greater performance than what is depicted in this video.
The following were used for testing.
1) Surface Pro 3 as the test bench.
This computer used a SK Hynix Internal 256 GB mSata SSD (HFS256G3AMNB-2200A)
2) Samsung T5 250 GB External SSD USB 3.1 (MU-PA250B/AM)
This solid state disk was formatted using the NTFS file system with a default allocation size of 4096 bytes. Note, this portable SSD supports TRIM when using a UASP (USB-attached SCSI Protocol) driver and the NTFS file system. This is Samsung's first portable SSD the support TRIM. The T1 and T3 generations do not support TRIM and solely relied on garbage collection. Two separate cables, USB -C to USB -C and USB-C to USB-A, are provided in the packaging.
3) Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA2000400)
This hard disk was formatted using the NTFS file system with a default block allocation size of 4096 bytes.
The following were used for video capture, stills and editing:
1) Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X10
2) Corel Live Screen Capture
3) Sony RX100 V for still photos and images
